Below average root zone soil moisture is likely in SA for the next month according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with growers looking to the sky for a rain break as seeding ramps up.
Across much of the state, rain tallies reached little more than a few millimetres, with many regions not experiencing a decent rain since January.
At Naracoorte, 12.8 mm of rain fell for the month of April until Anzac Day, while the town's median rainfall for the month is 20.2mm.
At Port Augusta, April typically gets about 8.2mm of rain, but this month only 1.6mm fell in the area.
Less than 1mm fell at Loxton, Wudinna and Ceduna, with tallies of 0.4mm, 0.6mm, and 0.2mm respectively, despite each town's median April tally being at 10.6mm, 14mm and 14.1mm.
A BoM spokesperson said below median rainfall was likely for across the southern agricultural areas during May to July, tending towards a neutral outlook for most of the rest of the state.
"However, there is a shift in the rainfall outlook between May and June," they said.
"The one-month outlook for May shows below median rainfall is likely for most of South Australia, while the outlook for June shows above median rainfall is likely for parts of the north and west, tending towards a neutral outlook for the agricultural areas.
"There is a high chance of above median maximum temperatures across the state during May to July.
"Minimum temperatures are likely to be above median for most areas, tending towards a neutral outlook (no strong push towards warmer or cooler than average) for parts of the Flinders, Mid North, Riverland and North East Pastoral districts.
"Below average root zone soil moisture is likely across the southern half of South Australia during May."
According to the weather body, the chance of at least 1mm between May 1 and May 7 across most of the agricultural areas is between 10 and 25 per cent.
This increases to at least a 50pc chance of 1mm for the two week period of May 1 to May 14.
The outlook for the month of May suggests a 25 to 50pc chance of exceeding 25mm across most of the regions, with parts of the South East, Kangaroo Island and the Adelaide Hills more likely to reach that tally.
Median rainfall for May is 44.2mm for Naracoorte, 18.4 for Loxton, 14.7 for Port Augusta, 27mm for Ceduna and 21.6 for Wudinna.
