Longtime sunshine state clients have taken home the top price bull at the Roseleigh Angus bull sale on Tuesday following spirited bidding from the gallery.
Held at the Eight Mile Sale Complex, Keith, the auction reached a top of $24,000 for Roseleigh Taylor T112.
The bull, sired by Mandayen Hector and our of Roseleigh Rachael, sold to Dilbong Pastoral, Tara, QLD, who purchased the top price bull last year.
Buyer Don Cossart said he had been buying bulls from the stud for about 20 years and was happy to add another to his herd.
"(The bull had) early growth, maturity, good length and upstanding pedigree," he said.
"We give them six months to acclimatise and then they're joined at 3 per cent.
"I didn't mean to buy the top price bull, I just meant to buy the bull I wanted.
"Ron and Mat Cowley pick out bulls for me - they're very good and very honest."
The bull had estimated breeding values of +5.4 for rib fat, +3.9 for birth weight, +49 for 200 day weight, +94 for 400 day weight and +124 for 600 day weight.
The August-drop 2022 bull was catalogued at Lot 33 due to its age, but Roseleigh stud principal Matt Cowley said he knew the bull would be popular.
"He was out of a really good cow family of ours and sired by a great Mandayen bull so we knew he'd get a lot of interest even being further into the sale," he said.
"He could've gone to a stud but going up to Dilbong he'll do really well.
"They're very loyal, longtime clients of ours so we're happy to see him go up there."
The second top price bull, Roseleigh T45, was knocked down for $15,000 to Scotglade Pastoral.
It had EBVs of +15 for BW, +55 for 200DWT, +98 for 400DWT and +133 for 600DWT.
The sale achieved a full clearance of 34 bulls selling to an average of $9529.
Wangara Props, Eudunda, were the volume buyer on the day, picking up four bulls to a $7000 top and an average of $6250.
Spence Dix & Co auctioneer Luke Schreiber the stud's pedigree encouraged repeat clients.
"What you find with the Roseleigh bulls is they're bulls that look like bulls," he said.
"They're masculine bulls, with plenty of good muscle and depth and I think people who buy bulls here continue to buy bulls here because they're very happy with the program.
"They have a female herd here as strong as any anywhere else in the country and they go back a long long way and that's why people come back."
