Canadian agronomist Sheri Strydhorst has been announced as the keynote speaker for this year's GRDC grains research update in Adelaide.
With more than two decades experience in helping Canadian grain growers increase profitability, Dr Strydhorst will lead a cohort of 30 speakers addressing the two-day event on February 6 and 7 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Dr Strydhorst also farms with her husband near Neerlandia, Alberta, so has lived experience of the challenges faced by growers.
She will compare and contrast the challenges of growers in Canada and Australia to shed light on adopting innovative agronomic practices and research.
Other speakers at the flagship event will include Lachstock Consulting's Nick Carracher, who will detail current and likely impacts on international grain markets.
SARDI's Peter Hayman and consultant Barry Mudge will discuss profitable nitrogen decision making and risk management, while the University of Adelaide's Chris Preston will present on optimising the efficacy of pre-emergent chemistry.
GRDC are expecting hundreds of grains researchers, advisers, consultants and growers to attend the two-day event.
GRDC Southern Panel chair Andrew Russell says the research updates are an opportunity to mix with and learn from industry experts.
"The Updates are so important because they offer us an opportunity to inform and learn from each other regarding how different management and decision-making worked or failed," he said.
"This information arms us with knowledge for future seasons, pending threats and emerging issues to deal with on the front foot.
"The opportunity to bring experience, expertise and the next generation of agronomists, advisers, researchers and growers together is truly magical.
"It's so informative to listen to the questions and debates during Update sessions."
A further GRDC update will be held on February 8 at Maitland on the Yorke Peninsula.
