A FULL contingent of feedlot buyers were back in the game at the Mount Gambier store market on Friday, after their noticeable October absence, playing a key role in maintaining a stable floor for medium to heavy steer prices.

This offered vendors a glimmer of optimism that a turn around could be under way.
The Angus steers 450 kilograms-plus Angus steers sold from $1.77 to $2.31/kg; heavy coloured steers in the same range made from $1.85-$1.95/kg; Angus steers 360-450kg made $1.40-$2.28/kg and coloured steers 360-450kg made $1.49-$1.93/kg.
Mediumweight Angus steers 320-360kg sold from $1.28-$2.40/kg while coloured steers in the same weight range made $1.42-$1.86/kg. Angus steers 280-320kg made $1.81-$2.67/kg and coloured steers of the same weights were $1.31-$2.33/kg. Lighter Angus steers under 280kg made $1.81-$2.67/kg.
Milroy Pastoral, Mingbool, sold five, 632kg 18-month-old to 20mo pasturefed cattle assurance scheme-eligible black baldy steers for the top dollars-a-head price of $1250 or $1.98/kg, bought by Hopkins River. A lighter draft, av 591kg, sold to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson Penola at $1100 or $1.86/kg.
J&F bought 12 of Milroy Pastoral's PCAS 503kg, 18-20mo Hereford steers at $960 or $1.91/kg, while a heavier draft at 508kg sold to Miller Whan & John, a/c Lindsay, at $940 or $1.85/kg.
Hopkins River were in the market for heavy Angus steers 450kg+, buying 11, 644kg 16-18mo steers at $1150 or $1.79/kg sold a/c B&B Corporation, Moorak, and eight, 597kg Angus-cross steers at $1120 or $1.88/kg sold a/c JW Chandler, Lucindale.
AG&AJ McKinnon, Strathdownie, Vic, sold 24, 497kg 18mo PCAS Borderdowns-blood Angus steers at $1150 or $2.31/kg to Princess Royal.
LA&AM Easson, Penola, sold 79, 15mo PCAS Stoney Point-bld Angus steers, 262-492kg, for an average of $939 with Princess Royal paying to $1000 or $2.03/kg for 15 steers, av 492kg.
The Easson family also sold 34, 10mo Woonallee-bld Angus-Simmental steers, 262-306kg, for an average of $939, both drafts selling to Elders Wangaratta, Vic, which paid to $2.56/kg or $670 for 13 head, av 262kg.
Elders Wangaratta also bought 13, 273kg Angus-cross steers at $730 or $2.67, sold a/c IJ&VK Freebairn, Kongorong.
Ansta Park, Heywood, Vic, sold Baldridge Command and Boonaroo-bld Angus steers with 22, 280kg steers selling at the highest cents-a-kilogram price at $2.68/kg to Creek Livestock and a heavier draft, av 358kg, going to Miller Whan & John at $2.18/kg or $780.
Bruce's Farm, Kongorong, sold 19, 327kg Boonaroo-bld Angus steers at $750 or $2.29/kg to Miller Whan & John; a lighter draft of 22, 298kg steers sold to Elders Wangaratta at $750 or $2.52/kg and a draft av 320kg sold at $760 or $2.38/kg sold to Green Triangle Livestock.
W Boylan, Claywells, sold 96, 14-15mo PCAS Pathfinder-bld Angus steers, 311-418kg, for an average of $786. Seventy-six of the Boylan steers sold to Caicowrie, Wattle Range, including a draft of 28, av 311kg, at $730 or $2.35/kg.
Glenford Partnership, Dartmoor, Vic, sold 11, 488kg Taronga-bld Poll Hereford steers at $950 or $1.95/kg to Miller Whan & John a/c Lindsay.
Victoria Park, Lake Mundi, sold 16, 294kg Warrensville-bld Hereford steers at $650 or $2.21/kg to Miller Whan & John Apsley, Vic.
JK&MJ Moore, Mooreview, Penola, sold 11, 292kg March/April-drop PCAS Simmental-cross steers at $680 or $2.33/kg to McKeon McGregor, Bendigo, Vic.
PA&RT Williams, Koorine, sold 27 PCAS Angus-cross steers, 293 - 355kg, to Nutrien Swan Hill, Vic, which paid from $590 or $2.01/kg to $660 or $1.85/kg.
Heifers were tough going again this month, particularly in the lighter, secondary types, with some drafts struggling to attract any bids.
Prices for 360-450kg heifers sold from $1.32-$2.04/kg; 320-360kg heifers from $1.06-$1.75kg. Lighter weight heifers 280-320kg sold from 91c-$1.82/kg and heifers under 280kg made 94c-$2.09/kg.
LK Ling, Mount Benson, sold 13,244kg PCAS eligible February/March-drop Sterita Park-bld Angus heifers at the top cents-a-kilo price at $2.09/kg or $510 to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson a/c Mingbool.
Miller Whan & John bought two of three drafts of 14-15 month PCAS Pathfinder-bld Angus heifers sold a/c W Boylan. The heaviest draft weighed at 436kg made the top dollars a head price at $840 or $1.93/kg, a lighter draft, av 327kg, sold at $540 or $1.65/kg.
Miller Whan & John bought eight, 412kg Simmental-Angus heifers at $840 or $2.04/kg a/c Lindsay, sold by Mascot, Worrolong; five, 426kg 14-16mo PCAS Angus heifers at $780 or $1.83/kg and a lighter draft, av 376kg, at $710 or $1.89/kg, sold by Wando Ponds, Wando Vale, Vic.
