Graziers from across the northern Flinders Ranges gained some insight into long-term soil conservation works last week, with the chance to view the results at Wirrealpa Station, via Blinman.
Warren and Barbara Fargher began working with soil conservation specialist Hugh Pringle more than 10 years ago, to address the issue of gully erosion in valuable pastoral country.
With support and funding from the Arid Lands Landscape Board, property mapping was carried out to assess and prioritise areas for on-ground works.
Working with experienced local machine operators, the Farghers have built banks and deep-ripped areas upstream of damaging gullies to save valuable pasture from being eroded after heavy rain events.
Through this planning, and after recent years of good rains, many once bare areas are covered in native perennial grasses and shrubs.
