ABOUT 450 feral cats have been removed from about 65 per cent of the Dudley Peninsula and the eradication team have big plans for this year.
Feral Cat Eradication project leader James Smith was confident in the team's success from the outset of this year, particularly because during summer, cats are difficult to catch.
"In the warmer months it is a lot more difficult to trap cats. There is a lot of the food around. The team has however tried many new techniques and have now managed to remove over 450 cats," he said.
A Community Trapping Blitz from June 24 to July 4 will take place on the island.
Mr Smith said the team is focused on trapping as many cats as possible during one period.
"If people will be on the Dudley Peninsula at that time and want to help on their property, please get in contact with us.
"We will have traps to distribute, information to help guide where to place traps and have staff on hand who will be trapping too and help humanely euthanize cats should you need it."
A programmable, far seeing camera is now in the field and being tested and the team are expecting big results.
"We are anticipating great success from the camera - it will be able to detect feral cats at distance but also help the team capture and deter feral cats from the gaps in the fence at Pelican Lagoon," Mr Smith said.
"There are a lot of trials and testing to be done for this, which will carry on this year."
More staff will also be deployed across a larger area and trapping will begin near Penneshaw.
Mr Smith thanked interested residents that supported the team at the recent Penneshaw markets and urged those interested to watch this video demonstrating the importance of the large camera monitoring array.
Without constant surveillance, particularly behind where has now been cleared, feral cats could very quickly breed up.
The cameras in this instance helped the team focus their efforts and remove this feral cat before it got too far.
