Strathalbyn
Yarding: 1100
Steers to $2330
Heifers to $2520
Cows w CAF to $3520
INTERSTATE interest and statewide competition resulted in another surge in prices at the Strathalbyn store cattle sale on Friday last week.
Meat buyers competed strongly with feeders and restockers, with buyers present from local areas plus the South East, Yorke Peninsula, Mid North and South West Vic.
The majority of the 1100-head yarding were March to May drop weaners, with a small offering of yearlings, as well as pregnancy-tested-in-calf cows and cows with calves at foot.
Elders Strathalbyn agent Danny Reynolds said he was starting to sound like a broken record, but said prices were the strongest on record at Strathalbyn.
He said feeder steers were up to 45 cents dearer in places and general prices were up 35 to 40c across the board. The only surprise was on lighter cattle, which didn't reach the heights of the last Strathalbyn sale.
"There are a couple of reasons buyers are flocking here," Mr Reynolds said.
"Because of the rains up north in NSW and QLD. That's created another surge in the cattle market.
"There were a lot of commission buyers from QLD and NSW at Naracoorte (on Thursday last week) and they basically bought the market out, meaning other buyers that were there are still looking for cattle and have come this way.
"People in the Mid North have got feed down and failed crops so are also looking for cattle to put out so the surge comes down to a combination of factors."
