The second round of Great State vouchers were all snapped up in less than an hour, but Labor says the program needs a major rethink.
Labor leader Peter Malinauskas has said the initiative "failed to deliver the full benefit to our struggling tourism businesses", particularly when only half the vouchers were used in round one.
Labor wants the government to increase the voucher values; allow people to use the vouchers any day of the week (with Saturday nights presently excluded); and include boutique accommodation providers, hospitality venues, travel agents, experiences, tours and attractions.
But SA Tourism Commission chief executive Rodney Harrex said the more than 18,000 bookings made with Great State vouchers across the two rounds had helped regional accommodation providers significantly.
Regional occupancy in SA reached 60 per cent in December - the highest December rate on record.
"The response to the vouchers has been overwhelming, with forward bookings strong through to the end of March," he said.
