Ewe lambs to $318
Wether lambs to $210
PRICES reached $318 twice at this year's on-property first-cross ewe and wether lamb sale at Cooranga, Lucindale, on Friday.
The James family offered 7600 first-cross June/July-drop ewe lambs, which averaged $275, while 7300 wether lambs av $168.
The top price was first achieved for 200 ewe lambs, av 56.5-kilogram, sold to Andrew Brown, Padthaway.
Ivan and Pauline Hocking, Lucindale, paid $318 for 241 av 56.5kg, as well as $306 for another 200.
The Hockings paid the $318 top price at the 2019 sale.
Pinkerton Palm Hamlyn & Steen director Richard Harvie said this year's offering was largely bought in smaller runs, with the ewe lambs bought in 26 lots overall.
He said the sheep presented well overall, with this the first time they had been weaned at shearing.
The second run of ewes av 51.2kg sold to $314, paid by the Corbins, Lucindale, with 400 sold to N Watson, Lucindale, and 497 to Merrett Livestock, Millicent, at $306.
Ewes at 48.6kg sold between $292-$302, heading to Nutrien Mount Gambier, account Teakle, Badenochs, Mount Gambier, PPHS accounts Maddern and P Scullion, and Merrett Livestock account Gilbrae.
In the wether offering, the top price of $210 was achieved for 210 av 58.3kg, paid by Thomas Foods International, which also picked up 1450 av 51.4kg at $164, 751 av 49.5kg at $166 and 1063 av 48kg at $166.
Another 875 av 53.4kg sold to JBS at $184.
Elders Lucindale's Ronnie Dix said the ewe prices were largely on par with those at Naracoorte the day prior, with the later-drop lambs showing good growth for age.
"The top run may not have had the big highs, but the middle run of sheep sold very well," he said.
"The wether lambs sold above expectations."
