Agriculture and the environment will be combined into the one government department, as part of a shake-up of the public service by Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
The Department of Environment and Energy will be broken up, with the environment section to go into the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.
Energy will move to the new Department of Industry, Science and Resources.
Mr Morrison said the number of government departments were being scaled back to reduce congestion in the bureaucracy.
