Royal Adelaide Show 2019: Speckle Park class hijacked by Vic sire

Hanging Rock Hi Jack P14 was sashed the supreme exhibit by judge Ryan Bajada, Elders, Pakenham, Vic, who commended the 14-month-old bull on its sire appeal, calling it the "complete package".

"You can grab a good handful of skin on that calf, which is a good indication he will continue maturing and developing," Mr Bajada said.

"(Its's a) calf with a lot of style, a lot of length, a lot of depth, that sire appeal I spoke about before, (and) he's got that carcase merit."

Exhibitor John Ellis, Hanging Rock Speckle Park Stud, Newham, Vic, said Hi Jack was the first son of Minnamurra Leander's to hit the show ring.

Minnamurra Leander was bought by a syndicate, which included Hanging Rock, in 2017 for a record price of $35,000, and Mr Ellis said the sire topped six of the 13 Speckle Park Estimated Breeding Values globally.

"Hi Jack was the youngest in his class but not the smallest, showing an exemplary growth rate, and he is so calm as well as having the look at me attitude which attracted the judge," Mr Ellis said.

The bull had fat scans of 8 millimetres and 5mm for rump and rib, and an eye muscle area of 100 centimetres squared.

It had been shown once previously, winning supreme exhibit at the Finley, NSW, multi-breed show less than a fortnight earlier.

Hi Jack will be retained in the Hanging Rock stud with the aim to continue showing him until the Sydney Royal in 2021, where Speckle Park's will be the feature breed in conjunction with their international congress.

Senior champion bull went to the 18 months to 24 months class winner, 20-month-old Six Star Huglehoff, which was shown by Merom Speckle Park Stud, Canterbury, Vic.

This bull was previously named reserve junior champion bull at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, earlier this year.

Jack Nelson of Jackungah Speckles, Pine Lodge, Vic, exhibited the senior and grand champion female, a three-year-old cow, which had an eight-month-old bull calf at-foot.

Mr Nelson bought Glengarry Luo's Secret M6 at the Speckle Park feature breed sale at the Melbourne Royal in 2017, and joined her to Jackungah Memphis M12 to produce its calf.

Mr Bajada described the cow as long, feminine, refined and super functional, as well as doing a wonderful job on an impressive calf.

Junior champion female went to Adelaide Hills-based 11-month-old Ewyn 61Y Sassafras P45, exhibited by KJ&VA Johnston and DV&S Kerber, Balhannah.
