Western Flat breeders the Funke family took out the prestigious interbreed pen of three rams on Saturday evening, making it the second year in a row it has gone to the White Suffolk breed.
But it came down to a countback from the Border Leicester trio from Coolawang stud, Mundulla, who were runner-up.
Nine shortwool and longwool teams were vying for $1600 voucher from Landmark and Gallagher having won the group of three class in their respective breeds earlier.
The prestigious class for under 1.5 year old rams is judged on evenness and quality of type.
Bundara Downs stud principal Greg Funke said it was a real thrill to win the prestigious interbreed class.
"This is our breeding objective to breed these type of rams with this amount of muscling so to have all the judges agree with what we are breeding towards is awesome," he said
"We are breeding for a balance of figures, eating quality traits and that visual aspect, to be able to put it together in one package is everything that we aspire to."
The stud's three rams were all born within a month of each other and by three different sires, including the senior champion White Suffolk ram which will a wildcard entry in the Adelaide Elite Ram Sale.
The other two rams will be retained in stud.
"We are finding it harder to source rams so we started up some different programs within our stud to get some outcrosses for us," Mr Funke said.
Ian Gilmore,Oberon, NSW, who was one of the nine judges heaped praise on the line-up on the mat.
"My first show in Adelaide was 2005 when I was lucky enough to judge the Border Leicesters and in all my time here I have never seen a line up from the breeds as good as these are - the depth in this class is far superior to what we have ever seen in my opinion," he said.
His top pick were the Border Leicester trio.
"They are three powerful young rams that all carry identical wool, the same heads, the same structure I found it easy to back my judgement yesterday and put them first," he said.
Third place went to the Poll Dorset group from the Rowett family,Ulandi Park stud, Marrabel.
