MOUNT Compass, South Australia, dairyfarmers Warren Jacobs and Perrin Hicks are hopeful a free trade agreement with China could lead to improved farmgate prices.

They milk at Whispering Pines in partnership.
Mr Hicks said he was hopeful the deal might bring some benefits, even if they were not seen for a few years.
"I like to think there will be greater demand for milk," he said. "Greater demand for Australian dairy will hopefully increase the milk price."
Mr Jacobs said his understanding of the FTA was that it would grow a market for Australian dairy exports.
He is hopeful that with a growing market comes the opportunity for the farmgate price to increase and stabilise.
"Having a minimum price would be very useful," he said. "We could, with confidence, go to the banks and borrow money.
"For a young farmer especially it could have extra market stability."
Mr Jacobs said the population of China should mean the market was fairly stable.
"There are a lot of people in China, and more and more drink milk because it is a good healthy product," he said.
