THREE local GRDC forums will be held in the coming months to provide graingrowers and industry stakeholders with the opportunity to discuss grains research, development and extension investments and activities.

The GRDC Southern Regional Cropping Solutions Network is hosting interactive forums at Wandearah (low rainfall zone) on June 13 from 9am to 12.30pm, Farrell Flat (medium rainfall zone) on June 25 from 9am to 12.30pm, and Kingscote (high rainfall zone) on August 16 from 10am to noon, prior to the Ag KI conference.

Southern RCSN coordinator Jen Lillecrapp says the forums are a way for growers and industry to talk directly with GRDC staff and local members of the GRDC Southern RCSN.

"The forums provide graingrowers and industry with the opportunity to have their say on cropping profitability constraints and opportunities and to shape future RD&E," she said.

"The investment of grower levies and a snapshot of GRDC RD&E outcomes and activities to tackle important regional issues will be discussed at the forums."

A focus topic for the Wandearah forum is increasing the productivity of sandy soils, and leading a discussion on this will be CSIRO researcher Therese McBeath.

New generation and adapted wheat and barley options for a range of sowing times to minimise the impact of frost and heat stress will be the focus of a presentation at the Farrell Flat forum by Kenton Porker from the SARDI.

Issues such as treating acid soils, growing pulses on acid soils and annual ryegrass control are expected to be discussed at the Kingscote forum.
