ELIGIBLE drought-stricken farmers are being reminded of some of the assistance available to them

ELIGIBLE drought-stricken farmers are being reminded of some of the assistance available to them, including the Drought Community Support Initiative.

St Vincent de Paul Society SA chief executive officer David Wark, who is helping roll out the federal government support, believed many people were not fully aware of the assistance available to them, and hoped more local farmers would reach out to seek help from Vinnies.

Immediate financial support to eligible recipients may include up to $3000 per household - using a combination of up to $2000 in cash, and up to $1000 in the form of a direct confidential payment to businesses in the area to stimulate the local economy.

"Many people faced with the loss of income, due to the impacts of drought, have needed help with paying for groceries, hardware, fuel, fodder, vehicle and farm machinery repairs," Mr Wark said.

"In our region alone, we've provided tens of thousands of dollars in assistance to date, but there are still many experiencing the impacts of the drought who are not yet reaching out for the help they need.

"We'd like to support as many households impacted by the drought as possible, and encourage anyone who could benefit from a listening ear and financial support to contact us for help today."

To be eligible, recipients must be a farmer, farm worker or farm supplier or contractor in one of the 21 SA local government areas included in the Drought Communities Program.

Applications close June 9.
