MOUNT Pleasant's annual agricultural show attracted a record number of beef cattle entries, with about 120 head vying for the wide array of broad ribbons on March 16.
It was the third year in a row the show has attracted more than 100 cattle, with exhibitors travelling from Crystal Brook in the north and Padthaway and Lucindale in the South East.
The long haul was worth it for the Hann family, Nampara Angus stud, Lucindale, with their 12-month-old heifer Nampara Penny P74 named junior champion female and overall supreme beef exhibit.
Judge Anton Volker, Goomaburra Simmentals and Belmore Shorthorns, Naracoorte, said he could not go past the type and style of the young female on the day.
"I think she's got a very bright future, she's a female I think you can do a lot with," he said. "She's very feminine, and a female that has good neck extension, is very clean through that front end and follows through with that depth and hindquarter.
"She's a very complete young heifer."
Penny P74 did not have an easy run to the supreme title, with junior females making up nearly half of the entries in the beef section, with 57 entered from a diverse range of breeds.
The senior champion female went to to a Square Meater matron exhibited by Ken and Robyn Prokopec, Rainbow Valley stud, Springton.
Mr Volker said 3.5-year-old Rainbow Valley Peggy Puddin was a good example of its breed, doing a very good job on its young bull calf.
Junior champion bull was won by the Eckermann family, Aruma Limousin stud, Two Wells, for the second consecutive year.
Eleven-month-old Aruma Presley impressed the judge with its muscularity and tidiness.
"He's a calf that's got a hell of a lot of meat and muscle to him," Mr Volker said.
"He's also very clean through that front end for the amount of muscle he's got behind, but he's also got a fair bit of cover for a young calf."
Rounding out the broad ribbons, senior champion bull was Tolhverrae Nic Natanui, a Black Simmental from the Rothe Brothers' Tolhverrae stud, Padthaway.
"This bull is a very good example of the breed," Mr Volker said.
The inaugural Junior Beef Jackpot proved popular, with 11 entries in the bull class and 21 in the heifer section.
Entries were scored by a panel of three judges - Platinum Livestock's Ben Dohnt, Victor Harbor, Shannon Kunst, Ebony Park Simmentals, Mount Crawford, and Crystal Bell, Prairie Falls Murray Greys and Brangus and GCL Show Supply, Breakaway Creek, Vic.
Winning a total prize pool of $410 for the heifer jackpot was Charolais entry Moohaki Miss Red Pepper, shown by Josh Wiltshire and Sam Edwards, Imperial Livestock, Mount Pleasant.
Aruma Pearl was awarded the $100 second prize, with Murray Grey entry Carrsview Phoebe Tarella, exhibited by the Carr family's Mount Torrens stud, taking $40 for third place.
The Charolais breed's winning run continued, with Arabar Nassa from the Wilson family's Arabar stud, Balaklava, claiming the $293 junior bull jackpot.
Aruma stud played bridesmaid again, with its junior champion bull Presley claiming the $55 second prize, while Lewis Bruggemann's black Simmental bull Glental Primus won the $22 third prize.
