It may be 13 years since the Wisanger Panthers won their last A grade footy premiership but an Australian Wool Network sponsorship deal is helping them to stay on the field and keep warm in SA grown wool.
Last season, the Kangaroo Island team were the first SA club to sign up to the national initiative which enables country sporting clubs to buy guernseys, beanies and scarves in their team colours from AWN-owned Hysport at wholesale prices.
They can then sell these to their players and supporters to raise funds.
AWN state manager Rod Miller is encouraging other clubs to contact him about the Only Merino knitwear range and says it is a chance to get wool back to grassroots areas and grow demand among the next generation.
“There is nothing like the wind howling in winter at the footy and you are rugged up in your team colours to appreciate the performance of wool,” he said.
