Coomealla, NSW, livestock worker Courtney Watson has been named as the Pooncarie Field Day Youth Ambassador for the 2018-20 event.
Ms Watson, who grew up on the land and continues to work in agriculture, said she was keen to promote the tiny township of Pooncarie, NSW, and its people, having first-hand experienced being welcomed herself.
She said she was keen to make sure many more young people head along to the Pooncarie Field Days to showcase the opportunities, the characters and the spirit the event brings to the Western Division.
The role of the Youth Ambassador is to promote and encourage young people to be more aware of agriculture in the community and be the face of the biennial field day.
“Suitably for the award, we were looking to recognise someone who is aged between 15-25 that shows leadership qualities, keen to be involved with and promote the community, enthusiastic and energetic and of course have a connection with the Pooncarie and district communities,” field day chairman Angus Whyte said.
Ms Watson said the prize and chance to be involved in the field day would be a great opportunity for her to build networks and skills.
“This event is important to the community, so to inspire new people in my age demographic to get there and see the agricultural environment will be a challenge I’m ready to tackle, and I believe that being part of the field day committee I can build my confidence and expand my involvement of being part of a community group,” she said.
“Events like this are important to rural communities, and we need to work together to ensure it remains vibrant, strong and importantly fun.”
Ms Watson has previously been involved in the Wentworth, NSW, Show and believes their are chances to transfer those skills across.
“Courtney demonstrates the hard work ethic and fun personality that’s indicative of the people of our region,” Mr Whyte said.
“We are excited that she will bring fresh ideas to the committee that will attract the younger generation and family participation with mini novelty activities for school aged kids; it’s these ideas and attitudes that will ensure our event and our great region will continue to thrive.”
The prize as Youth Ambassador includes a cash incentive to attend another field day to gain learning’s and insights and a mentoring program, which will allow Ms Watson to gain the experiences of being part of the committee. She will also be supported to drive her own initiative to attract attendance to the event.
