Human beings rely on clothing to help regulate their body temperatures, and this creates the feeling of comfort.
Due to the wool fibre’s inherent characteristics, wool fabrics provide this thermal comfort better than any other common apparel fibre.
How does wool do this?
Firstly, the inherent natural 3D crimp of the fibre traps pockets of still air, insulating your skin from the cold environment which keeps you warmer.
Wool fibre also absorbs and slowly releases moisture from within its structure which reduces post-exercise chill, helping maintain a stable microclimate next to skin, which keeps you more comfortable. In hot and dry climates, this function keeps you cooler by transferring moisture vapour away from the skin and allowing it to evaporate. Because of this, wool fabrics can feel up to two times cooler to touch than synthetic fabrics in hot climates.
Not only does it manage temperature and moisture, the complex chemical structure of wool enables it to absorb and lock away odours within the fibre, only releasing them upon washing, which of course means wool fabrics smell better during use!
