RURAL Media SA hosted a breakfast meeting titled 'GMO grains - the facts without any spin' on Thursday this week.
SA’s genetically modified crop moratorium was originally put in place for reasons surrounding trade and market access considerations.
But an independent review of the moratorium is underway, led by Emeritus Professor Kym Anderson.
The meeting was held to try and cut through the emotional debate on the topic.
Speakers included plant breeder and Pinery farmer Andrew Barr and Grain Producers SA chief executive officer Caroline Rhodes.
The other speaker was University of Adelaide Emeritus Professor Peter Langridge, the former chief executive officer of the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics.
Prof Langridge said Europe, where there was some of the greatest opposition to GM, imported more than 100 GM products for human consumption.
“We’re happy to eat it, we’re happy to inject it - but we’re not happy to grow it,” he said.
