A massive woolly ram nicknamed ‘Gawny’ has left Pinnaroo Merino breeders the Schroeder family on a premiership-winning high.
At the Classings Classic sale at Murray Bridge on Monday their 21.5 micron ram sold for $60,000, a new record for the multi-vendor sale organised by Bill and Rose Walker.
The ardent Melbourne Demons footy supporters have named many of the top rams in their Gunallo stud after players from the club over the years.
It was fitting they likened the 128 kilogram ram to talented ruckman Max Gawn.
The Gunallo 460 son was always odds-on favourite to top the sale after the Schroeders knocked back a significant pre-sale offer but they never expected to receive double their previous best price.
“We rated Gawny fairly highly and put a high reseved on him- we would not have been disappointed if we took him home,” Brad Schroeder said.
“We thought maybe $30,000 or $40,000 but never in our wildest dreams did we expect it to go as high as it did.”
The buyer was the Superior Wool Syndicate which comprises six commercial Merino breeders and two studs, SWM at Tintinara and Lucernbrae at Callington.
