ONE good female can found a champion stud, according to experienced Queensland seedstock producer Matt Kirk, and with that in mind he placed a junior heifer at the top of a very competitive field in the Santa Gertrudis ring at the 2018 Royal Adelaide Show.
Nangaringa Naomi, from the Fogden family’s Loxton stud, was an exceptional individual - fleshy, feminine and with a body capacity that gave her a clear edge, Mr Kirk said.
It was young Thomas Fogden, a fourth generation SA Santa breeder, who picked her out as weaner, declaring she had a big future, and took her to the SA Heifer Show in July where she finished second in her class.
His father Peter, and grandparents Richard and Deidre, were on hand to see him lead Naomi to a Supreme Exhibit title at the Adelaide Show.
The Fogdens were among the first to breed Santas in SA and today sell around 20 bulls a year into SA and Central Australian commercial herds.
Richard Fogden said his parents Murray and Marie were running Herefords in the 1950s when they first came across the breed at Keith and decided it had potential.
Trailblazing a new breed is never a smooth path but it was the Santa’s ease of calving combined with early growth rates that had cemented its place in SA, he said.
Naomi first edged out the three-year-old senior champion female, Seymour Vale Monique, exhibited with her second calf Seymour Vale Quebec by brothers Kevin and Alan Lintern from AMP Farms Trust at Tungkillo.
AMP Farms, established in 2000, have a herd of 85 stud females and have been showing at the Adelaide Royal for more than ten years.
Kevin Lintern said her moderate frame, structural soundness and length of body - all of which was demonstrated nicely in her calf - made her an obvious choice for showing.
Alan Lintern said she was from a cow family that had been very strong for AMP. Her mother Seymour Vale Julie produced progeny that have consistently performed well at sales.
Heath Tiller’s HB Rural at Warnertown collected the gong for top bull via Goolagong N4, who was on his first outing.
Mr Kirk, who breeds Brahman and Simbrahs in the Central Burnett region, said he was the most complete bull in a competitive senior class.
“He fits all categories - both his raw data and what you can see with your eye,” he said.
“He can get about and the physical structure is there for the meat to be put on. He is a bull with tremendous beef characteristics.”
