The first phase of the development of a national investment plan for weeds research and development has begun, after a consultation paper seeking feedback was released this week.
The consultation paper, and the feedback that is expected to be received from the first stage of the consultation process will form the basis of the Draft Weed Investment Plan, that the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions aim to deliver in the coming months.
The Centre for Invasive Species Solutions chief executive officer Andreas Glanznig said weeds were a major challenge for natural resource management, agriculture and conservation.
He said after the federal government’s investment of $20 million into the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions, the Federal Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources David Littleproud requested that the centre develop a 10-year investment plan for weed RD&E that aimed to improve weed management in Australia.
“We are in the process of doing this, but an important step in this process is the consultation phase. Our portfolio director, together with the consultants who are assisting the centre with this project, have prepared a consultation paper. This consultation paper is now available.
“It will also help determine where and how the centre could facilitate greater coordination of the national RD&E effort addressing weeds.”
Anybody interested or involved in weeds research, management, policy or practice are encouraged to provide feedback on the draft plan. Visit invasives.com.au/weeds-rde-feedback/.
