THERE was nothing to deter the smile on Morganvale stud principal Allan Morgan’s face following his on-property auction on Tuesday.
He set an on-property sale record with lot 33 – Poll Hereford Morganvale Magic – selling for $20,000 to Yavendale Herefords, Adelong, NSW, as well as drawing buyers from established interstate studs.
“I’m pretty pleased that long-term, progressive stud breeders saw the genetics in the bull,” he said.
“To get that support from well-established recognised breeders is gratifying.”
Morganvale offered 52 Poll Hereford bulls, with 39 finding new homes for a sale average of $6167, which was up on last year’s results. The $20,000 top price was also up $5500 from Morganvale’s previous record.
Five Black Simmental bulls were also offered, with one selling for $4000.
The top price Poll Hereford bull Morganvale Magic was bought by Ruralco stud stock specialist Mark Duthie, Dalby, Qld, on behalf of Yavenvale.
The 16-month-old bull, sired by Wirruna Hot Stuff H356 and out of Morganvale Dorreen K205, weighed 712 kilograms and had a scrotal circumference of 39 centimetres.
Morganvale Magic had a low group Breedplan birth weight of 3.9, a 200-day weight score of 38, a 400-day weight score of 58 and a 600-day weight score of 97.
Mr Duthy said he had been travelling across SA for eight days inspecting and buying bulls, but Morganvale Magic’s statistics impressed him.
“I was impressed by its growth for age, muscle, and how it is a really smart calf at just 16 months of age,” he said.
Mr Morgan was also impressed with the 10 offsprings from sire Wirruna Hot Stuff, which were all sold during the auction.
“All of Hot Stuff’s progeny were highly sought-after today, it has a very good grainfed index,” he said.
Volume buyers included Pandurra Pastoral, Port Augusta, with six bulls averaging $5250, while Stephens & Stephens, Kingscote, took five averaging $4600.
From Dartmoor, Vic, Avon Park Oakley bought three averaging $7000, and PL&Y Walladge, Willalooka, also took three averaging $4333.
The sale was conducted by Elders and Landmark, with Gordon Wood and Ross Milne taking bids.
