Two South East butchers are set for an influx of customers after coming up trumps in the Australian Meat Industry Council National Sausage King Awards, held at the weekend in Healesville, Vic.
It was a case of third time lucky for Mount Gambier’s Collins Court Butcher with its traditional pork sausages.
“The previous two years we have won best pork sausage in the state and last year we were second in Australia so it is great to win,” owner Michael Lamond said.
“We started doing about 10 kilograms a week, now we are at 50kg to 60kg/week and and hope to get over 100kg a week.”
Tender Cuts, Naracoorte, claimed the top spot for the Best Butcher’s Burger with its Thai chicken burger in shredded coconut.
The win made Tender Cuts the first entrant to claim national awards in both the sausage and gourmet burger sections.
“It is always a challenge to put your product out there to be best in your area and then best in Australia – to have any success let alone first place is very satisfying,” owner Shaun Watson said.
