Bull sales in the South East got off to a solid start on Wednesday morning, February 7, with the Lakeside Simmental sale.
More bulls were sold than last year, with 26 going out of 31 offered.
While the average was slightly back on last year, it was still a healthy $5180.
The top price was improved by $2500.
The $11,000 sale topper Lakeside Mambo M040 was 21-months-old and weighed 850 kilograms. It had four millimetres of P8 fat, 3mm rib fat and an eye muscle area of 120 square centimetres.
Mambo was sired by PHS Polled Worldwide 14W and out of Waterfront Flirt F-20.
Son and father Michael and Graeme Kempe, Artimore & Partners, Tintnara, bought both the top and second-highest price bulls.
“We used to buy at Waterfront previously, and just continued to follow the bloodlines,” Michael said.
The second-highest price was $9500 for Lakeside Magic Mike M028, another 21mo bull. It weighed 872kg, with 3mm P8 fat, 3mm rib fat and 132sqcm EMA.
Magic Mike was also sired by PHS Polled Worldwide 14W and out of Rosemont Park Donella.
Michael said the bulls would be used in a cross-breeding program.
“We’ll breed them with Shorthorn cows, and then the F1 heifers will be mated to an Angus,” he said.
Graeme said both bulls were easy-doing types with good muscling, as well as softness.
Last year’s top price buyer John McErvale, Cadell, Branxholme, Vic, returned to purchase four bulls to a top of $6000 and average of $4500.
LS Johnson & Sons, Naracoorte, bought five bulls to a top of $9000 and an average of $6000.
There were also six pregnancy-tested in-calf heifers offered, with five sold.
The top price PTIC heifer was Lakeside Mahlia M009, which sold for $8000 to Wormbete Simmental stud, Illabo, NSW.
Overall, the PTIC heifers averaged $4500.
There were also eight weaner heifers sold from 14 offered, averaging $1700.
The top price weaner heifer was Lakeside Natalie, which made $2500, selling to Hill Ton Simmentals.
Lakeside principal Lily Xu said she was happy with how the sale went, and especially with the new bidders in attendance.
Auctioneer Laryn Gogel said the stud was striving to produce structurally correct bulls with good temperament.
Mr Gogel said there was a good gallery of buyers in attendance.
“The competition on the bulls was strong on the top-end, but just lacked a bit in the middle,” he said.
“The competition on the females, particularly the polled females, was solid.”
The auction was conducted by Southern Australian Livestock.
