YOUNG farmers are being given the chance to upskill as part of a push from the state’s dairy industry.
DairySA is calling on those in the sector to apply for its Next Gen Challenge.
DairySA extension coordinator Bec Walmsley said the challenge was the first of its kind in SA, based on a similar model in WA.
She said it would give young people involved in dairyfarming the chance to upskill or develop ideas they would like to see happen on-farm. She said there was some scope to meet the needs of different farmers, with the goal to encourage more of the next generation to get, and stay, involved in the industry.
Options included training, but also the chance to create their own projects, as well as gaining in confidence for events such as meetings with banks.
Included in the challenge is a two-day retreat and access to professional facilitators who will help those involved learn to sell themselves.
“This, and all industries, are changing and becoming a more professional environment, and we want it to go this way,” Ms Walmsley said.
“We want to get the guys who are really keen to stay in the industry and get them better at what they do.
“Young people on-farm probably underestimate how good they are.”
Ms Walmsley said the challenge would also allow young farmers to create a network of like-minded people to tap into.
Nominations for the challenge close on January 30.
