THE FIRST, and only, feature ewe sale to be held at Cleve this year featured a top quality yarding of 9100 sheep and lambs, which attracted strong buying support from across the state.

Elders Cleve’s Mick Noble was pleased with the sale’s results. He said the quality of the yarding was particularly high as it featured a number of dispersals and flock reductions.
Landmark Tumby Bay’s Justin Thompson quoted the sale as firm on recent northern sales. “It was a good, solid sale,” he said.
“Some sheep stayed local, but there was also good buying support from the South East and Mid North.”
The top price for 1.5-year-old ewes was $228 – up $46 on last year’s highest return of $182.
The 240 July-shorn, Glenville-blood ewes were part of a flock reduction by Darke Peak farmer Richard Finch.
Making the second highest price at the sale was Matthew Dunn, Pendeen Trust, Rudall, with 104 August-shorn, Moorundie Park-blood 1.5-year-old ewes that made $220 to Elders Lucindale.
Kicking off the sale was a pen of 598 ewes from a flock reduction of GR Arbon & Co, Lock, who topped last year’s Cleve sale.
The 1.5-year-old ewes were August-shorn, Greenfields-bloods and went for $204 to Elders Lucindale.
EGA Holdings, Rudall, sold 97 August-shorn, Morley-blood 1.5-year-old ewes for $200 to Elders Cleve.
Both making $190 for 1.5-year-old ewes were DJ&RL MacGowan, of the Deloshanda stud, Darke Peak, with 128 August-shorns, and MR&S Zacher, Lock, with 55 September-shorn, Moorundie Park-bloods.
The remainder of the 1.5-year-old ewes made between $140-$190, and were mostly purchased by local graziers.
In the breeding ewe section, SJ&EL Carmody, Cowell, who were dispersing their flock, made the highest price.
They sold 225 July-shorn, Glenville-blood 2.5-year-old ewes at $180 to Landmark Kimba.
The same vendor also sold 155 2012-13-drop ewes to EP Livestock & Real Estate, as well as 92 4.5-year-old ewes for $130 to Elders Cowell.
Another dispersal came from JN Ranford & Co, Cleve, selling 89 March-shorn, Gum Hill-blood 2.5-year-old ewes for $178 to Quality Livestock.
The same vendor also sold 119 March-shorn, Calcookara-blood 2.5-year-old ewes for $176 to Quality Livestock, along with 224 Nantoura-blood 2012-13-drop ewes for $171 to EP Livestock & Real Estate.
Another dispersal was held by Beinke Holdings, Darke Peak, selling 175 September-shorn, Allala-blood 2.5-year-old ewes for $174 to Elders Jamestown, along with 104 September-shorn, Allala-blood 3.5-year-old ewes for $148 to EP Livestock & Real Estate.
Making the top price for 5.5-year-old ewes was DH Turnbull & Co, Cleve, with 444 September-shorn, White River-bloods at $140, sold to Hill Livestock.
Both selling 5.5-year-old ewes for $138 to Elders Cleve were RJ Norris, Cowell, with 243 September-shorn, Glenville-bloods and EGA Holdings with 115 August-shorn Morley-bloods.
Looking at ewe lambs, Richard Finch sold 180 April/May 2016-drop Glenville-bloods for $128, while SJ&EL Carmody sold 130 Glenville-bloods for $120.
Topping the woolly wether lambs were CL&BE Elleway, Cowell, with 127 Oak Farms-bloods at $96.
SJ&EL Carmody also sold 51 woolly wether lambs at $82 to Hill Livestock, while SG&JB Forrest, Minnipa, sold 237 White River-bloods at $80 to Southern Australian Livestock Lock.
JW Michael & Son, Mount Damper, sold 112 August-shorn, White River-blood wether hoggets for $94 to Thomas Foods International.
