They were one of the first to find Russian Wheat Aphid on Yorke Peninsula near Edithburgh, just days after it was found in the Mid North.
Mr Wissell said there was a lot of work done trying to find how far the pest had spread, with them discovering it was mostly in central and southern YP – albeit in small numbers – with little in the north.
Mr Wissell said, as the first year, this was a difficult pest to negotiate, but the communication from SARDI had been great.
“We’re all learning, since we’ve never had this experience before,” he said. “We’re taking information from overseas and trying to relate it to the Australian system.”
Mr Wissell was concerned about next season, with reports the aphid had been found in barley and brome grass on the side of the road.
“It could be an issue if we get summer rain,” he said.
“We can control the green bridge but we can’t control the side of the road.”
