AN eight-month-old Red Angus with “great sire presence” was named grand champion calf at the SA Young Beef Breeders Calf Classic.

Goonoo Red Machine was bred and shown by the Jordan family, Goonoo stud, Tamworth, NSW.
Elevated from the bull calf class of 11 entries, it was sired by Rockridge Lookout.
“It has great strength through the spine, depth of body and a good ‘sirey’ head,” judge Jasmine Nixon, Wagga Wagga, NSW, said.

In the previous day’s breed judging, Red Machine’s dam Goonoo Red Gayl was awarded the reserve senior champion Red Angus female. A half-brother out of the same female was third in the beef cattle interbreed male class.

The heifer section attracted 15 entries and was won by four-month-old Limousin Bre-Li Park Fifi Mae, from the Bre-Li Park stud, Echunga.
“We want females that grow quickly so they can produce calves that we can turn-off early and be efficient animals. This heifer does it well,” Ms Nixon said.

The two fancy dress classes were judged by TV personality Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello.
