Not only did the Vic stud win supreme ewe exhibit with a Border Leicester and reserve champion short wool ram with its sole Poll Dorset at the show, the Jacksons took out supreme British breed group and then supreme all breeds group with their Border Leicesters.
The group, consisting of one ram and two ewes under 1.5 years old, contained the interbreed supreme ewe and a ram that won supreme long wool ram at Hamilton Sheepvention in Vic.
Both were also interbreed supreme long wool champions at the Ballarat Sheep Show in Vic in July, while the ram’s sire and the ewe’s grand-sire are the same – Retallack Pure Steel 635/10.
The 12.5-month-old supreme ewe, weighing 99.5 kilograms, had a 12.5-millimetre fat depth and 36mm eye muscle depth, while the 106.5kg ram, also an August 2015-drop, had 14mm fat and 38EMD.
The other ewe in the group, weighing 88kg with 9.5mm fat and 34EMD, was consistent to type, according to Mr Jackson.
“It placed third in its class behind the supreme long wool ewe,” he said.
All still had their lambs teeth and were sired by home-bred rams.
Mr Jackson said the ram from the group would be offered at the Horsham Border Leicester Show & Sale in Vic in November, while brothers of the ram and the supreme ewe will be offered at the stud’s on-property sale in October.
More than 90 per cent of the sale rams will be Superborders.
