In the helmsman auction, the $3000 top price went to a ram which ranked 140 on the Merino Production plus index and 136 on the Dual Purpose plus index.
It had a 17.7 micron fleece, with 3.6 standard deviation, 18.3 coefficient of variation, 99.8 per cent comfort factor.
“It’s an animal with good meat attributes in an elite fibre,” Lorelmo KS principal Joe Keynes said.
The ram was bought by sale regulars J&M Andre, Kangaroo Inn, who has supported the stud for a number of years. They bought a second ram at $2200.
Classings Ltd’s Bill Walker, who bought the top ram on their behalf, said it had “super white wool, with great ASBVs and structure”.
ACO&JL Hall, Kangaroo Island, were a volume buyer at the sale, with six rams to $2100, averaging $1183.
Netallie Station, Wilcannia, NSW, bought two rams to $1300, and Hartland Farm, Maitland, bought two rams to $1200.
Mr Keynes said the stud had placed a strong focus on fleeces and ASBVs.
“We’re trying to get the carcase and bodyweight up, while still maintaining the wool characteristics,” he said.
“Knowing where the ASBVs are gives us a pointer of where to head. We’re building an animal that will work for our clients in the future.”
Mr Keynes said the sale also had some new clients.
“It’s good to see new clients and people having a look at what we're producing,” he said.
The sale was conducted by Elders Mount Pleasant and Spence Dix & Co.
