The export arm of the SA Produce Market, Australian Produce Collective, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with its Singapore-based partner, IM Holdings.
The MoU, which was witnessed by Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Minister Leon Bignell, was the first step in formalising a joint venture company which will be headquartered in Singapore, opening up markets throughout South East Asia and China for local producers.
APC chief executive Craig Katz said it was an exciting step for the business.
“With the growing demand for premium fresh Australian produce, the Singapore-based Australian Produce Distribution Centre will deliver better service and better availability for more customers throughout the ASEAN region,” he said.
“It is a key part of our strategy to prepare our supply chain for the future.
“This is the next chapter for APC, with the foundations being laid earlier in the year for distribution of fresh produce into the Middle Eastern marketplace.”
A dedicated and branded Australian Produce Distribution Centre will act as a consolidation and distribution point to help serve Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar.
Up to 50 business representatives are in South East Asia as part of a mission – being led by Mr Bignell – to create business and investment opportunities and further promote SA.
Mr Bignell said SA was continually increasing its capacity in intensive horticulture and fresh food production.
“Business missions like this one to South East Asia play an important role in deepening our understanding of what opportunities exist and how we can best pursue them,” he said.
“Regular missions to the region will raise the state’s profile, help businesses gain new markets, strengthen the knowledge base and generate new investment and employment opportunities.
“The mission complements the SA-South East Asia Engagement Strategy and follows previous missions by Premier Jay Weatherill and Investment and Trade Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith.”
