The main access road between Fregon and Idulkana, and the Mimili Airstrip Access Road will be upgraded in a project that forms part of the joint $106.25 million joint Commonwealth and State project.
The aim of the project is to reduce travel times and cost of operating a vehicle in the region, with the road to provide a new surface, improving ride quality, safety and accessibility.
Other key benefits include safer travel between communities, improved delivery of food supplies and allowing access to emergency services during wet weather.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the upgrade is important to improve living standards of the local community by improving access to essential services and facilities.
“It will also help to reduce travel times for people in this very remote region while also reducing the cost of operating vehicles by reducing wear and tear,” he said.
“The road is unsealed and predominantly unsheeted and as it is below the natural surface level is susceptible to flooding.”
SA company Greenhill Australia was awarded a $780,000 contract to undertake the road design works.
The tender was conducted in line with the State Government’s Industry Participation Policy, which assists small and medium South Australian businesses to win government contracts.
The first stage of the project will be completed in September, with a total upgrade of 210km of roads to be completed by 2019.
