Bright future in rangeland management

“Three years ago, I couldn’t imagine goats so high,” he said.

“I’m praying they stay the same and it’s not just a bubble.”

Mr Bright and wife Jan run an estimated 4000 rangeland goats about 140 kilometres south of Broken Hill, NSW.

This year the Brights have made the decision to sell off most of their Dorper flock and focus on goats.

“With unreliable weather, we’ve decided to not run them together and it’s easy to get rid of sheep,” he said. 

“Goats are hard to eradicate and they have a good income.”

He said in the past few decades, running goats has enabled them to stay on the land.

“Anyone in our area of western NSW wouldn’t be on the property if it weren’t for goats,” he said.

“Throughout the ‘noughties’, when it was extremely dry, the goats got up to weight and survived.”
