THE Harvey family will start seeding in the Adelaide Hills next week, despite minimal rain predicted for the traditional Anzac Day break.

“We are going in with caution,” Neil Harvey said.
The family finished sowing nearly 160 hectares of sheep feed (oats, vetch and ryegrass) this week for their 1900-ewe self-replacing Merino flock, before preparing to sow lupins and canola early next week.
“Cereals and peas should be after that, but we may have to see if any rain eventuates,” he said.
Neil said the year had not started as usual, with only 73 millimetres of rain received so far.
“This time last year we were lucky to have had plenty of rain, and then we had a good thunderstorm in September to help us to finish of the season,” he said.
“At this stage it looks like we may be waiting for a May break.”
The Harveys crop 1620ha from Hartley to Strathalbyn, with Neil and Michael Harvey the fifth generation on-farm. Their family has been farming in the region since 1874.
