The event will run from April 27 to 29 at the Adelaide Showground and is open to 12-23 year olds. A first of its kind for young sheep enthusiasts it has been mirrored on the incredibly successful SA Junior Heifer Expo.
The program will include educational lectures and practical sessions with sheep and wool as well as junior judging. On the final day a sheep handlers competition will be held.
Expo committee member Matt Ashby says it is a great opportunity to get more young children involved in the industry. “We have the wether competition at the (Royal Adelaide) show for school kids but now anyone interested in the sheep industry can come along in their holidays and learn more about the finer points of the sheep industry,” he said.
Expo secretary Nikki Ward says it aims to build skills and knowledge in the sheep industry but also promote to young people the careers on offer.
“Entrants will have the opportunity to learn from young adults involved in the industry and industry experts through a range of fun and interactive sessions, with a particular emphasis on the career opportunities within the sheep industry. Our main aim is to encourage the next generation to engage in a profession within the sheep industry.”
“Even though the event is SA focussed in its first year, the idea is to grow it into a national event in years to come.
AWI has come on board as the platinum sponsor with the SA Sheep Industry Fund also providing generous support for the Expo. In-kind support has been provided by RA&HS of SA and BizBoost.
The whole sheep industry has got behind the event, including many breed societies who are providing animals to be displayed and used for practical demonstrations and handling activities.
The Expo’s major prize for a senior entrant will be a NZ study tour. The SA Sheep Industry Fund has provided funds for a few lucky recipients to attend LAMBEX 2016 in Albury, NSW in August.
Registration is $165 per participant which includes on-site accommodation and all meals.
