IN-CALF heifers sold to $1980 at the Mount Compass annual breeders sale on Friday, well up on 2015 prices.
The top pen of 10 large-frame PTIC Angus-Friesian heifers, due to calve February 10, was sold by RAC Props, Mount Compass, at $1980, while another 15 of the same made $1860, six made $1780 and another 10 made $1820.
It was standing room only at the sale, with Prostock agent Clint Endersby saying there were many vendors, buyers and onlookers keen to see how the near 500-head yarding fared because of high prices in the cattle job.
“The money was comparable to what we thought the job would do,” he said. “Up another 50 per cent on last year’s sale (which topped at $1440).
“Even some of the smaller heifers that we thought may have struggled, still made good money, which shows the demand for breeding cattle at the moment.”
Mr Endersby said PTIC dairy-cross heifers made $1400-$1980 at the sale, with most $1600-$1800, while PTIC beef-cross heifers made from $1000-$1800.
Combined Agents auctioneer Jeff Emms also sold heifers, with two Angus-Herefords, PTIC to Pathfinder bulls, making $1920 for JP&CJ Rye, Victor Harbor, who also sold one at $1600.
