CONDITIONS on the Fleurieu Peninsula have been almost polar opposite to the South East for cattle producers.
Elders FP and Hills livestock manager Danny Reynolds said it had been a very good year for feed in the region so many people had held off selling, and good numbers of weaners had only just started to come onto the Strathalbyn market in the past month.
Those with weaners to sell have enjoyed great returns, with steers making a massive $3.86 a kilogram at the December sale.
Strathalbyn’s first sale in January was already full by mid-December, at 1100 head.
“Our second sale, on January 22, is also expected to be a big yarding as well,” Mr Reynolds said.
“Quality and condition-wise, the weaners that have been coming through are absolutely top-notch.
“The quality of the cattle is as good as I’ve ever seen it. At the same time, we’re seeing prices that we’ve never seen before.”
