PRICES and demand for heifers were more subdued last Friday on the second day of the Naracoorte Combined Agents Weaner sale than at the steer auction the previous day.

The 900 head of well-bred heifers offered extremely good value-for-money, with a much smaller gallery.
But a premium of more than $1.50 a kilogram was still paid for the larger lines of EU and PCAS-eligible and weaned heifers.
With some heifers selling for as little as $1.16/kg, the majority of sales ranged from $1.30-$1.50/kg and topped at $1.62/kg.
LS Johnson & Sons, Naracoorte, had a good day on Thursday with their steers making equal top price.
An excellent draft of 125 Waterfront and Allendale blood Simmental-cross EU and PCAS-eligible heifers from their Springbank property were offered on Friday and also topped the market with a sale high of $530, or $1.62/kg, for a pen of 23 heifers with an average weight of 327kg.
The draft of Johnson heifers made an average of $465.52.
Another local producer offering a good run of weaned, February/March-drop, EU and PCAS eligible Angus heifers was WV James & Son, Cooranga, Lucindale, who averaged $428.16 for their total yarding of 142 heifers.
The tops of the Cooranga draft made to $490 or $1.48/kg for a line of 16 Angus heifers with an average weight of 329kg.
A large line of 143 Pathfinder, Te Mania and High Gums blood Angus heifers, account Kangaroo Island's North Coast Pastoral, averaged a total of $395.78.
Their top price pen returned $425 or $1.38/kg for 34 heifers with an average weight of 306kg.
SK&CJ Tierney sold 20 weaned, PCAS-eligible Angus heifers, weighing 348kg for $550 or $1.58/kg and a second draft of 23 Angus heifers, weighing 303kg for $445 or $1.46/kg.
DR&JA Woodman sold a selection of 34 July/September 2012 older Angus heifers, weaned March 2012 and weighing 391kg, for $565 or $1.44/kg.
