CATTLE prices have started their descent from the dizzying heights of earlier sales and seem to be settling to a more sustainable level, with all classes of cattle selling slightly easier at the December market.

The store market had a wide variation in the yarding – the top drafts were exceptional and similar quality to those yarded in the two day Naracoorte weaner sales with some large runs offered.
However, as quality dropped off cattle were harder to sell, particularly in the heifer run.
Overall, 2384 steers sold to $1470, 934 heifers sold to $1180 and 86 cows and calves made to $1850.
Heavy Angus steers weighing 450 kilograms-plus made from $2.80 to $3.14/kg; 400–450kg from $2.61-$3.32/kg; 350-400kg $2.95-$3.30/kg; 300-350kg $2.90-$3.53/kg and less than 300kg from $3.35-$3.93/kg
Heavy coloured steers weighing more than 400kg made $2.29-$3.04/kg; 350-400kg from $2.86-$3.11/kg; 300-350kg from $3-$3.32/kg and less than 300kg $3.25-$3.70/kg.
Heifers weighing more than 400kg made from $2.55-$2.70/kg; 350-400kg $2.75-$3.05/kg; 300-350kg $2.65-$3.00/kg and less than 300kg $2.80-$3/kg.
Kilgariff Cattle Co sold 27, 16-18 month old, Angus steers, 492kg, at $1420 or $2.88/kg to Thomas Foods International.
Their second draft of 26, 16-18 month, Angus steers, 467kg, took top price per head honours at $1470 or $3.14/kg selling to Teys Charlton.
Kainwarra sold 20 Angus steers, 460kg, at $1380 or $3/kg. Teys Charlton bought their next two drafts, 11 Angus steers, 442kg, at $1280 or $2.89/kg and eight Gelbvieh-cross steers, 442kg, at $1300 or $2.94/kg.
Targeting heavier cattle in excess of 350kg, Teys Charlton also bought 14, 12-14 month old, Angus steers, 483kg, at $1400 or $2.90/kg, sold a/c MA Fennell & VM Richards and seven Angus steers, 442kg, at $1250 or $2.82/kg a/c Glenora.
Kleenview sold 13 Angus-cross steers, 468kg, at $1305 or $2.78/kg to Elders Mount Gambier and a second draft of 11 Angus steers, 497kg, at $1290 or $2.88/kg to TFI.
TFI were also on the lookout for heavier steers, buying a total of 104 for an average of $1333, including five Angus, 407kg, at $1220 or $2.99/kg a/c Jasmar Park and a draft of 17 European Union-accredited Angus steers, 370kg, at $1210 or $3.27/kg a/c AR&J Ellis.
Millanda Estate sold 11 Nampara/Weeran-blood, Angus/Simmental steers, 369kg, at $1210 or $3.28/kg.
