MURRAY Bridge will play host to the Murray-Darling Basing Royal Commission on Thursday, March 29, as the inquiry’s community consultation phase gets under way.
The Murraylands consultation is one of a series planned across the four Basin states, although dates for following events have not yet been announced.
Commissioner Bret Walker, Senior Counsel Assisting Richard Beasley SC and commission staff will head as far north as Toowoomba, Qld, and all the way down to the Murray Mouth as part of the consultation process.
Mr Beasley said it was important for the Royal Commission to listen to Basin communities and see key sites first-hand.
“We anticipate this will be a significant part of the Commission’s inquiry and will provide important information from local communities about the (Murray-Darling) Basin Plan,” he said.
The Commission was established in January by SA Governor Hieu Van Le, at the request of the former Weatherill government, to inquire into the operations and effectiveness of the Basin Plan. Mr Walker is due to provide his report on February 1 next year.
Basin community members are invited to register on the Commission’s website to attend or speak at the community consultations.
The Murray Bridge community consultation will be held at the Murray Bridge Community Club on Thursday, March 29 from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
