Glenthorne Farm, O’Halloran Hill, will be transformed into a working urban farm, a nature playground and green space for beginner campers.
The former Army training site and CSIRO research station spans 208 hectares and the state government’s A New Future for Glenthorne Farm initiative seeks community input to co-design the greenspace, to provide a place where individuals and families can connect with nature and learn about sustainability.
Ideas for the property already include an accessible farm where families can learn to grow and harvest their own food, trails for walking or cycling and a welcoming café.
A beginner campground where rangers would give tips to first-time campers is also up for discussion, to help people become more confident about camping and utilise SA’s national parks.
Sustainability, Environment and Conservation minister Ian Hunter said the initiative is a conversation starter.
“We want the community to help us design the greenspace into an active outdoor space with learning and play areas that will entice individuals and families to come and enjoy their natural surrounds,” he said.
“We want to make the most of the open green space for the social, physical and mental health of the community.”
