MOUNT GAMBIER

Yarding: 1154

Steers to $1380

Heifers to $1200

Cows with CAF to $2120

AGENTS quoted rates as being generally dearer across most classes of steers at the Mount Gambier store cattle sale on Friday.

The only exception was heavier steers, which were a fraction cheaper than last month.

After the price correction during the winter months, the trajectory looks to be heading back up again.

Light to medium-weight steers were fully firm on September returns.

They were reflecting the prices in the prime market, which has had a lift in recent weeks.

Despite the lesser yarding of 1154, some very good quality lines of cattle were offered, with restockers having the upper hand ahead of feedlot buyers.

Heavier Angus steers weighing 450 kilograms-plus sold from $2.71/kg to $2.97/kg, those from 400-450kg made $2.60-$3.09/kg and heavy coloured steers sold from $2.78-$3.08/kg.

Mount Gambier buyer John Hommelhoff bought 64 heavy Angus steers, 433-486kg, on behalf of Brian Smith Transport, Mount Gambier, including 28 from Griffin Pastoral Co, Biscuit Flat, from $1285-$1350, for an average of $1320 or $2.96/kg; and 10 Angus and Angus-cross steers, 14 months, 486kg, at $1320 or $2.71/kg, from Glenora, Strathdownie, Vic.

The top money of $1380, or $2.89/kg, was paid by O’Connor & Graney for 17 Hereford steers, 477kg at 12-14 months, from Griffin Pastoral Co, which sold a second draft, 445kg, at $1340 or $3.01/kg to Thomas DeGaris & Clarkson.

CG&SM Rentsch, Dartmoor, Vic, sold 13 Angus steers, 444kg at 13-15 months, for $1300 or $2.93/kg to Elders Mount Gambier, and seven Angus-cross steers, 450kg at 13-15 months, for $1300 or $2.88/kg to O’Connor & Graney.

Midweight Angus steers, 350-400kg, sold from $3.13-$3.55/kg, while coloured steers in this weight range made $2.49-$3.14/kg.

Weedon Pastoral Co, Glencoe, bought 67 Angus steers and 17 coloured steers, weighing 300-427kg.

It paid an average of $1051 for steers to stock its recently-acquired property at Wattle Range, including 11 Angus-cross steers, 389kg, at $1220 or $3.13/kg from Pepa Hill, Nelson, Vic; six Angus-cross steers, 419kg, at $1210 or $2.89/kg from McIntyre Heritage, Bray; five European Union-accredited Red Angus-Simmental steers, 347kg, at $1090 or $3.14/kg from Weaver Livestock, Edenhope, Vic; and seven Angus steers, 324kg, at $1110 or $3.43/kg from M Devries, Heathmore, Vic.
