A unique road safety initiative aimed at backpackers working in the multi-million-dollar horticulture industry on the northern Tablelands has been launched.
Using $15,000 from the state government’s RACQ Get Ready Queensland program, Mareeba Shire Council has developed “drive left” wristbands to remind international visitors to keep to the left on Australian roads.
Mayor Tom Gilmore said Mareeba Shire had high visitation from international tourists, particularly backpackers who combined seasonal work with their travels.
"Council recognised the need for a dedicated Drive to the Left campaign," Cr Gilmore said.
"Through our partnership with Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (MDFVGA) we can take a targeted approach to educate and remind road users to drive to the conditions so as to improve road safety across the shire.”
MDFVGA president Joe Moro said working holiday visa holders or backpackers were extremely valuable to the horticulture industry.
“They help us get crops to market so it’s important that we support them and educate them in road safety," Mr Moro said.
In addition to the wristband initiative, the council is working with the Department of Main Roads to put in place additional signage and road markings at key points to remind road users to keep left.
