DAVELLE South Devons, Jamestown, enjoyed a successful AuctionsPlus opportunity sale, achieving a rise in bull sales and a total clearance of females for the second consecutive year.
There were 26 bidders and 32 guests online. Of the 20 bulls offered, 15 sold to $8000, averaging $4800, while all 15 females sold to $3000, averaging $2260.
Bulls were sold into four states, with Davelle Progress Dixon L46 making the stud’s highest top price of $8000.
The bull, a red BC Progress 315U son that Davelle imported from the United States, was bought by John and Pam Flynn, Alpha stud, Armidale, NSW.
Long-time buyer Scott Nix, Boyup Brook, WA, bought four bulls, saying he appreciated Davelle’s breeding objectives.
Other repeat buyers included GD&BJ Mather, Mount Barker, WA, who bought Davelle H26 Prime for $5800 and two females – Davelle Fearless Rose J33 for $2500 and Davelle Fearless May J35 for $2200.
The Mathers have a nucleus of about 200 commercial South Devon cows and use South Devon bulls for replacements and an Angus bull to sell weaners.
Mr Leese was pleased with how South Devons were being utilised in crossbreeding operations across the country.
“We know the strong commercial traits of the South Devon and how complementary they are, especially to Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn and Bos indicus breeds,” he said. “It’s good to hear of the successes.”
Chris, Daphne and Andrew Bretag, Mannanarie, bought three cows to continue building their commercial herd, saying they were impressed by the way South Devons had performed, with calves straight off mum selling well.
