A RECORD price was achieved at Friday’s Mount Gambier store sale, with lighter steers reaching $4.39 a kilogram.
Local restockers gave feedlot buyers a run for their money with a packed buyers’ gallery actively bidding on the heavier end of the steer run, the majority of which were returned to paddocks in the South East and Western Districts of Vic, with prices up $50 on last month.
Landmark Penola’s Jeff Olafsen said it was “one of the dearest sales anyone had ever seen” with heifers making what would normally be considered steer prices.
“(There were) lightweight Angus steers selling well in excess of $4/kg,” he said.
“Cows and cows received sensational support, selling up to $2240 and heifers making, what normally would be considered steer prices.
“All in all, an outstanding market, with outstanding prices and good rewards for all vendors.”
Heavy steers topped at an incredible $1620 or $3.42/kg for a pen of Red Angus steers averaging 474kg sold account Braymore, and knocked down to Thomas Foods International.
TFI also bought five Nampara blood Angus steers 11-13 months av 349kg at $1210 or $3.46/kg sold a/c Nangkita, Eight Mile Creek; and five Angus cross steers, 13-15 months av 393kg at $1330 or $3.38/kg sold a/c Springburn.
Teys Australia bought 45 steers 300kg+, including 14 Rellum Farms Simmental blood, Simmental cross steers, av 391kg, at $1360 or $3.48/kg sold a/c GC&VJ Muller, Mount Gambier; seven Angus steers 16-18 months, av 405kg, at $1345 or $3.32/kg sold a/c G&A Harvey, and nine Santa Gertrudis/Angus steers, 5-7 months, av 293kg, at $850 or $2.90/kg sold a/c RD&VD Clark.
Princess Royal Feedlot, Burra, bought 13 Angus/Simmental steers 13-15 months, av 327kg, at $1120 or $3.43/kg sold a/c LF&YL Ellis, Roseneath, Millicent and 28 Angus steers July/August drop, av 363kg, at $1300 or $3.58 sold a/c Corinda Downs, Mingbool.
D&N Peel, Mount Benson, sold 89 Granite Ridge blood Angus steers for an average of $1172, their top draft, av 387kg, sold to Teys Australia at $1310 or $3.38/kg with a lighter draft, av 294kg, selling to Elders Mount Gambier at $1150 or $3.91/kg.
Yulkari Pty Ltd sold eight yard weaned Pasturefed Certified Assurance System accredited, August/September 2015 drop, Lancaster blood Angus cross steers, av 302kg, at $1080 or $3.58/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock.
Ngarmi sold 18 Granite Ridge blood Angus steers 13-15 months, av 338kg, at $1225 or $3.62/kg to RWKLS.
La-Lee sold 56 September/October 2015 drop, weaned Coolana and Temania blood Angus steers at an average of $1052, the top draft av 245kg, sold at $1055 or $4.30/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock. A second lighter draft, av 221kg, sold at $955 or $4.32/kg.
The entire line of 68 well bred European Union and PCAS accredited Angus steers, 8-10 months with weights from 270kg to 251kg, sold a/c PJJ Geraghty, Inverness, for an average of $1131 were bought by Elders Mount Gambier, the top draft av 270kg selling at $1165 or $4.31/kg.
Leaella Partnership sold 22 Banquet and Coolana blood Angus steers 8-10 months, EU and PCAS accredited, av 219kg at $890 or $4.06/kg and a second draft of 14 Angus cross steers, av 221kg, at $910 or $4.12/kg to Elders Mount Gambier.
Wright’s Swamp sold 39 Banquet and Pathfinder blood, PCAS certified Angus steers 9-11 months, weights from 310 to 274kg for an average of $1106, the top draft, av 274kg, selling at $1,145 or $4.18/kg to Miller Whan & John. Miller Whan & John also bought 20 Certified Organic Angus steers 8-10 months, av 311kg, at $1140 or $3.67/kg sold a/c Peeweena Pastoral.
Hillside sold nine Spotshill blood Poll Hereford steers, av 435kg, at $1450 or $3.33/kg to Princess Royal, a second draft, av 380kg, at $1280 or $3.37/kg selling to TFI.
J Haines sold eight Charolais/Angus steers, av 308kg, at $1100 or $3.57/kg to Landmark Hamilton; Hunter Brothers, Kingston SE sold nine Angus/Murray Grey steers, August/September 2015 drop, av 307kg, at $1105 or $3.60 to Landmark Kingston.
GT Trading sold 20 Hereford cross steers 8-9 months, av 318kg, or $1130 or $3.55/kg to Ray White Keatley Livestock and a second draft, av 289kg, at $1120 or $3.88/kg.
R&TR Paltridge sold 13 score eight Friesian steers, av 434kg, at $1070 or $2.46/kg, a second draft, av 332kg, at $840 or $2.53/kg.
Prices on a good quality run of cows and calves reached a high of $2240, with lively competition between graziers from the south east of SA and western districts of Vic, made $350 higher than the top prices paid in the May store market.
JF Mitselburg sold nine Angus and Angus cross heifers with nine first cross Angus calves at foot, preg-tested-in-calf to Yerwal and Granite Ridge bulls, at $2240 and a second draft of Angus and Angus cross cows, second calvers, at $2200 to Landmark Tintinara. The Mitselburg family also sold 18 4-6-year-old Angus cows with Angus CAF, PTIC to Yerwal and Granite Ridge Angus bulls, at $2060 to Chay & Merrett, Millicent.
Devon Hills sold 14 Angus/South Devon cows, third and fourth calvers with 14 Angus CAF at $1880 to Elders Heyward and 12 Angus/South Devon cows with 14 Angus CAF at $1820 to Southern Australian Livestock, Bordertown.
Buyers not wanting to go home empty handed after missing out on steers, were forced to bid against strong feedlot competition in the heifer run, driving heifer prices north.
