Some of the best early spring rain in more than 10 years has begun its watery track across South Australia.
A deepening low pressure system over Western Australia is slowly drifting over SA and initiating bands of rain and storms.
The system is drawing on a huge amount of moisture from the warm and humid tropics. Warm waters in the Indian Ocean and tropical waters to the north of Australia are enhancing this.
During the next 24 hours the low will set its sights on SA. Totals by 9am Saturday are likely to read around 20 to 30mm across much of the south.
Adelaide and especially the hills could see the rain gauges overflowing with 30 to 50mm.
The Northeast Pastoral looks like a major beneficiary as the rain and storms carve through Friday afternoon. Totals up and around 50 to 80mm could be seen.
As a continuous stream of humid air is sucked in by the low from the northeast and fuelled by a strong upper trough, the heavy rain and storms will thunder into Victoria and NSW later in the day.
