FOOD producers in SA have echoed the call for improved country of origin labelling laws in the wake of the contaminated berry scare.
Clare Valley grain producers and manufacturers Jim and Katherine Maitland, Pangkarra, would like to see food labelling laws become more transparent to help remove ambiguity in the shopping aisle.
"The requirements on packaging need to be standardised, so that every consumer can easily see the country were the food was (made produced or grown), manufactured and packaged," Jim said.
Pangkarra Foods produce flour, pasta and lavosh from durum wheat grown on their property.
Jim says provenance and supply chain transparency is integral to their brand, and also an important marketing point.
"It is important that consumers have the opportunity to know where their food has originated from," he said.
"When it comes to exports Australia is regarded globally as producing premium and clean food, however domestically our products are getting lost on the retail shelves."
