A BLACK senior exhibit, Charles of Lochwinnoch, won the coveted Royal Adelaide Show supreme champion Highland bull ribbon against strong competition.
Weighing 525 kilograms, he had an eye muscle area of 88 centimetres and fat measurements of 5 millimetres and 4mm.
Judge Charles Wallace said the bull beat the junior champion because of his weight-for-age.
The bull was also more than 60kg heavier than the reserve senior champion bull. And when it came to the final broad ribbon, Mr Wallace said the bull was a good example of the breed.
"A bull will always have more influence on a herd and for the breed as a whole," he said.
Charles was sashed supreme over grand champion female Iona of MacLadanae, exhibited by TL&RA Perry, Kapunda.
Iona first won her class - the biggest of the day for the Highland breed - before being sashed senior and grand champion female.
Mr Wallace said it was the four-year-old cow's production capabilities which made her stand out.
"Production is what we are doing, getting animals on the ground and continuing to do so throughout the animal's lifespan," he said.
Mr Wallace also commented on the cow's movement, thickness and the good job she was doing on her three-month-old bull calf.
